SINGAPORE – Swimmer Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) won the first international gold medal of her career Sunday on the opening day of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. She finished first in the girls 200m IM, winning the first gold medal for Team USA and bringing the team’s medal tally on day 1 to three (1 gold, 2 bronze).

“It’s awesome; it’s such a great experience here,” Jones said. “The pool and the environment give everybody so much energy. I guess this will just boost their energy level up a little more. My next big meet I’ll remember this moment and how proud I am and go after that again.”

After trailing for the entire race, Jones surged during the final 100m freestyle to take the lead from Russian Kristina Kochetkova, winning by more than half a second. Finishing third was Barbora Zavadova of the Czech Republic, and in sixth was the USA’s Jordan Mattern (Centennial, Colo).

Mattern’s evening left her with little time to spare. After exiting the pool following the 200m IM, she barely had a chance to catch her breath before joining three of her teammates for the mixed 4×100m freestyle relay final. A unique addition to the Youth Olympic Games, the mixed swimming relay races – featuring two boys and two girls on each team – are among the new events debuting in Singapore.

The U.S. relay team consisted of Mattern, Kiera Janzen (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Erich Peske (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and Thomas Stephens (Richmond, Va.), and finished in sixth place. In first was the team from China, who beat out Australia on the final touch, and France was third.
